Ah, springtime. Sunny, dry and not too hot, perfect for a ride down Delaware Rt. 9 to Dover. The Air Mobility Museum has been on the "Club Ride" list for the last 2 years, but has always been rained out. Access has been a problem as the base has been under restricted entry and required a military person to gain entry. This year the new public access gate and road is open. If you are into aircraft this is the best local spot to check out planes. Entry is free.
Rt. 9 is on of my favorite roads in this area. Low traffic, smooth paving, lots of curves and great river vistas with a destination.
The museum has a nice collection of heavy aircraft, bombers, transports and refueling types from WWII to present day. Fighters from WWI to present are on hand. What makes it different are the Crew Chiefs on board the various planes. The veteran on the B-17 was celebrating his 60th anniversary of bailing out over Germany. We spent several hours exploring and asking questions before hunger took over and made us search out a local Deli. After lunch we split off into 3 Groups.
Group 1 - heading way north - the long way home. Group 2 -- heading up the turnpike -- the fast way home. Group 3 -- back the way we came -- Rt. 9.

This unlucky B-17 crewman was shot down over Germany 60 yeas ago to the day..
He shows us details of the tiny Ball Turret that one small guy gets to ride and shoot from for hours.
